Robert Wensley "Bob" Dealy
Robert Wensley Dealy, 85, passed away peacefully in Stanardsville, VA on May 7, 2017. He was born March 19, 1932 in New York. He earned a bachelor's degree at Cornell University, then a masters in history at Columbia Teachers' College and a masters at Yale Divinity School. Bob taught history and coached tennis at several private secondary schools in New York City, including the Browning School-- where he received the Clair Smith Award-- Brooklyn Polytechnic School, and Sacred Heart School. He published "The Tower and the Kingdom", a textbook used in the Browning School's religious studies classes. Bob was passionate about education and devoted to teaching, and his students loved and revered him. He was a member of the National Council for Social Studies and later received the Outstanding Teacher Award from University of Chicago.
Bob loved playing and coaching tennis, and he became a sports writer for World Tennis Magazine, for whom he interviewed and wrote about such tennis greats as Jimmy Connors, John Newcombe, Don Budge, Jack Kramer, Pancho Gonzales, and Pancho Segura. Bob loved to travel visiting Hawaii, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Bob retired to Fredericksburg VA where he continued to play tennis and was active in church and community groups. He had many friends and especially enjoyed the Tuesday breakfast group that met weekly at the Forum Restaurant in Fredericksburg . Bob was passionate about family history and genealogy, collecting documents and letters for his family to treasure.
Bob is predeceased by his parents Frank Nichols Dealy and Margaret Gray Wensley Dealy, sister Margaret Nichols Griffel, and brother Frank R. Dealy. He is survived by nieces Wensley A. Dealy, Darilyn H. Dealy, Caroline N. Dealy, and nephew Frank P. Dealy. Per his wishes, a graveside service will be held at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury NY where Bob will join his parents, to be announced at a later time.
